An orchard against the high cold.

Altitude and the brief, bright abundance of a short growing season.

Ladakh

First passage

I begin Ladakh with apricot season. It is a place to start looking at the labour, landscape, memory and changing present that gather around a single thread. A real portrait needs many voices and many return visits. This first passage simply leaves the door open.

This is a first doorway, not a total account of a place. As the archive grows, I will shape these stories with local knowledge, review and full credit to the people in them.

On the road here, 2027 to 2029

Four ways to meet a place.

01

Food

Skyu, apricots and butter tea belong to a high-altitude kitchen built for the climate.

02

Festival

Losar opens a new year with prayer, gathering and renewal.

03

Flora & fauna

Snow leopards, kiang and high desert birds live across vast, quiet distances.

04

Fashion & craft

The goncha and layered woollens are practical responses to a severe landscape.
