The shore keeps what is left behind.

Island knowledge, reef care and the limits of visitor appetite.

Andaman and Nicobar Islands

First passage

I begin Andaman and Nicobar Islands with reef care. It is a place to start looking at the labour, landscape, memory and changing present that gather around a single thread. A real portrait needs many voices and many return visits. This first passage simply leaves the door open.

This is a first doorway, not a total account of a place. As the archive grows, I will shape these stories with local knowledge, review and full credit to the people in them.

Four ways to meet a place.

01

Food

Island food reflects many communities and the sea that feeds them all.

02

Festival

Local calendars and gatherings belong to the islands' own communities.

03

Flora & fauna

Coral reefs, turtles and island forests make a fragile, living shore.

04

Fashion & craft

Dress is practical, modest and shaped by heat, salt and island life.
