Where cloth remembers a hand.

Colour drawn, resisted, washed and returned to the cloth.

Andhra Pradesh

First passage

I begin Andhra Pradesh with kalamkari. It is a place to start looking at the labour, landscape, memory and changing present that gather around a single thread. A real portrait needs many voices and many return visits. This first passage simply leaves the door open.

This is a first doorway, not a total account of a place. As the archive grows, I will shape these stories with local knowledge, review and full credit to the people in them.

Four ways to meet a place.

01

Food

Pesarattu and a bright, sharp chutney make a fine morning conversation.

02

Festival

Ugadi brings a new-year note that tastes of sweet, bitter and everything between.

03

Flora & fauna

The Eastern Ghats and long coastlines hold mangroves, shorebirds and changing habitats.

04

Fashion & craft

Kalamkari carries the hands, dyes and stories of the people who make it, and I want to learn them before I photograph a single piece.
