Where coast and inland meet.

Craft, food and the layered histories of a joined territory.

Dadra and Nagar Haveli and Daman and Diu

First passage

I begin Dadra and Nagar Haveli and Daman and Diu with coast and inland. It is a place to start looking at the labour, landscape, memory and changing present that gather around a single thread. A real portrait needs many voices and many return visits. This first passage simply leaves the door open.

This is a first doorway, not a total account of a place. As the archive grows, I will shape these stories with local knowledge, review and full credit to the people in them.

Four ways to meet a place.

01

Food

Coastal cooking, local grains and Portuguese-influenced histories meet at the table.

02

Festival

Festivals vary across this joined territory, each with its own calendar.

03

Flora & fauna

Beaches, mangroves and inland forest edges sit close together here.

04

Fashion & craft

Light cottons, regional weaves and craft markets reflect several overlapping cultures.
