Warmth made fine enough to fold.

Fibre, shawl-making and the hands behind a material known worldwide.

Jammu and Kashmir

First passage

I begin Jammu and Kashmir with fine warmth. It is a place to start looking at the labour, landscape, memory and changing present that gather around a single thread. A real portrait needs many voices and many return visits. This first passage simply leaves the door open.

This is a first doorway, not a total account of a place. As the archive grows, I will shape these stories with local knowledge, review and full credit to the people in them.

Four ways to meet a place.

01

Food

Kahwa, breads and seasonal dishes bring warmth to a long table.

02

Festival

Spring and autumn bring varied regional observances, each with its own rhythm.

03

Flora & fauna

Hangul deer, lakes and mountain ecosystems are among the most precious in the Himalaya.

04

Fashion & craft

Pashmina and embroidery carry long chains of skilled, patient work.
