Water is a way of getting home.

Working boats, monsoon weather and the daily movement of a shore.

Kerala

First passage

I begin Kerala with backwater lives. It is a place to start looking at the labour, landscape, memory and changing present that gather around a single thread. A real portrait needs many voices and many return visits. This first passage simply leaves the door open.

This is a first doorway, not a total account of a place. As the archive grows, I will shape these stories with local knowledge, review and full credit to the people in them.

Four ways to meet a place.

01

Food

A sadya is a meal with a grammar: leaf, rice, small portions and many balances.

02

Festival

Onam brings flowers, boats, games and a warm idea of homecoming.

03

Flora & fauna

Backwaters, shola forests and coasts all have their own ecological pressures.

04

Fashion & craft

Kasavu borders and handloom cotton show restraint as a form of elegance.
