A loom near the doorway.

Household knowledge and the texture of a daily practice.

Manipur

First passage

I begin Manipur with handwoven cloth. It is a place to start looking at the labour, landscape, memory and changing present that gather around a single thread. A real portrait needs many voices and many return visits. This first passage simply leaves the door open.

This is a first doorway, not a total account of a place. As the archive grows, I will shape these stories with local knowledge, review and full credit to the people in them.

Four ways to meet a place.

01

Food

Eromba and rice dishes have a distinct, lively balance of heat and herbs.

02

Festival

Yaoshang brings colour, sport and community energy in the spring.

03

Flora & fauna

The Sangai deer and Loktak’s floating biomass make ecology impossible to ignore.

04

Fashion & craft

Phanek and inaphi are woven with meaning, care and strong regional identity.
