Roots learn to carry a path.

Rainfall, care and the patience demanded by a fragile place.

Meghalaya

First passage

I begin Meghalaya with living roots. It is a place to start looking at the labour, landscape, memory and changing present that gather around a single thread. A real portrait needs many voices and many return visits. This first passage simply leaves the door open.

This is a first doorway, not a total account of a place. As the archive grows, I will shape these stories with local knowledge, review and full credit to the people in them.

On the road here, 2027 to 2029

Northeast Frontier, 4 Nov to 12 Dec 2029

Four ways to meet a place.

01

Food

Jadoh and the local rice dishes are my way into Khasi kitchens.

02

Festival

Wangala and the other gatherings belong to particular communities and seasons.

03

Flora & fauna

Living root bridges, caves and cloud forests have grown over generations, tended by the villages around them.

04

Fashion & craft

The jainsem and other woven garments carry a quiet, assured presence.

Sign-ups open in January 2027, before I leave. A quiet note from me, now and then. No noise.
