What a bamboo grove can become.

Craft, building and everyday ingenuity, light in the hand and strong in use.

Mizoram

First passage

I begin Mizoram with bamboo. It is a place to start looking at the labour, landscape, memory and changing present that gather around a single thread. A real portrait needs many voices and many return visits. This first passage simply leaves the door open.

This is a first doorway, not a total account of a place. As the archive grows, I will shape these stories with local knowledge, review and full credit to the people in them.

Four ways to meet a place.

01

Food

Bai, rice and smoked ingredients carry the flavour of a hill kitchen.

02

Festival

Chapchar Kut celebrates the season after jungle clearing, with dance and communal joy.

03

Flora & fauna

Bamboo and forest habitats shelter an ecology that is easily disturbed.

04

Fashion & craft

Puanchei textiles make colour feel ceremonial and alive.
