The spice beneath the rain.

Hillside farms and the people who read a changing season.

Sikkim

First passage

I begin Sikkim with cardamom. It is a place to start looking at the labour, landscape, memory and changing present that gather around a single thread. A real portrait needs many voices and many return visits. This first passage simply leaves the door open.

This is a first doorway, not a total account of a place. As the archive grows, I will shape these stories with local knowledge, review and full credit to the people in them.

Four ways to meet a place.

01

Food

Gundruk, momos and warm soups speak to a mountain appetite.

02

Festival

Losar and the regional festivals open up through the people who celebrate them.

03

Flora & fauna

Red pandas, orchids and alpine habitats live at the quiet edges of the high country.

04

Fashion & craft

The bakhu and woven textiles offer layers made for weather and occasion.
