A silk border carries a city.

Design, labour, inheritance and living commerce in the loom.

Tamil Nadu

First passage

I begin Tamil Nadu with kanchipuram silk. It is a place to start looking at the labour, landscape, memory and changing present that gather around a single thread. A real portrait needs many voices and many return visits. This first passage simply leaves the door open.

This is a first doorway, not a total account of a place. As the archive grows, I will shape these stories with local knowledge, review and full credit to the people in them.

Four ways to meet a place.

01

Food

Filter coffee, tiffin and a banana-leaf meal can each tell a different local story.

02

Festival

Pongal marks harvest with warmth, ritual and the pleasure of shared food.

03

Flora & fauna

From the Nilgiris to the coast, habitats range from tahr country to turtle beaches.

04

Fashion & craft

Kanchipuram silk is architecture in thread: weight, border, rhythm and shine.
