Threads made for ceremony.

Skill, material knowledge and the lived value of a fine border.

Karnataka

First passage

I begin Karnataka with mysore silk. It is a place to start looking at the labour, landscape, memory and changing present that gather around a single thread. A real portrait needs many voices and many return visits. This first passage simply leaves the door open.

This is a first doorway, not a total account of a place. As the archive grows, I will shape these stories with local knowledge, review and full credit to the people in them.

Four ways to meet a place.

01

Food

Bisi bele bath, filter coffee and coastal dishes make one state feel many-sided.

02

Festival

Mysuru Dasara is ceremonial, civic and deeply rooted in a city’s annual rhythm.

03

Flora & fauna

The Western Ghats are a biodiversity treasure that rewards quiet observation.

04

Fashion & craft

Mysore silk and Ilkal weaves show different kinds of precision.
