Blue arrives by hand.

Colour, kiln and the beautiful uncertainty inside a fragile craft.

Rajasthan

First passage

I begin Rajasthan with blue pottery. It is a place to start looking at the labour, landscape, memory and changing present that gather around a single thread. A real portrait needs many voices and many return visits. This first passage simply leaves the door open.

This is a first doorway, not a total account of a place. As the archive grows, I will shape these stories with local knowledge, review and full credit to the people in them.

Four ways to meet a place.

01

Food

Dal baati churma is built for dry country and a long afternoon.

02

Festival

Gangaur arrives with colour, song and devotion, especially in the spring.

03

Flora & fauna

Khejri trees, desert birds and quiet night skies are part of the place, not empty space.

04

Fashion & craft

Bandhej, leheriya and blue pottery all hold colour with startling confidence.
